Missed AI’s “Act 1”? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn’t buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of “Act 1″—the R&D phase. “Act 2” is the global rollout. Continue »
Advancing fault-tolerant quantum computing
Quantum computers are inherently fragile, as their basic building blocks (qubits) can be disturbed by small changes in temperature, electromagnetic interference, or microscopic manufacturing flaws. They thus require error correction to be useful.
But identifying and fixing those errors is not easy. Traditional computers can be overwhelmed by the task, which forces the quantum computer to stop and wait.
That’s why it’s a big deal that IonQ was able to show that a single computer processor could handle this workload, enabling a quantum computer to operate at full speed.
“Successfully validating real-time decoding across hundreds of logical qubits and over millions of logical operations is an important milestone,” IonQ research lead Nicolas Delfosse said. “Moreover, the fact that our decoder runs on a single CPU provides a practical path to commercial-scale fault-tolerant quantum computing.”
Partnering with an AI titan
IonQ’s shares also received a boost from news of its collaboration with Nvidia. IonQ will install one of its new Superion 256 systems at Nvidia’s Accelerated Quantum Research Center (NVAQC).
IonQ’s quantum computing platform will integrate directly with Nvidia’s AI infrastructure, aiming to accelerate research in areas such as financial risk management, materials science, and drug discovery.
“Deploying our Superion 256 into cutting-edge environments, such as Nvidia’s NVAQC, will lead to developments allowing our partners to benefit from our scalable architecture and robust manufacturability,” IonQ CEO Niccolo de Masi said. “We see this as the beginning of an exciting era of hybrid quantum-classical computing.”
