Elon Musk’s Support for AI Regulation
Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO and owner of artificial intelligence company xAI, Elon Musk, recently expressed his backing for California’s contentious AI safety bill in a social media announcement.
“This is a tough call and will make some people upset, but, all things considered, I think California should probably pass the SB 1047 AI safety bill,” Musk said in a post on a social media platform.
Musk’s Advocacy for Structured AI Guidelines
“For over 20 years, I have been an advocate for AI regulation, just as we regulate any product or technology that is a potential risk to the public,” Musk asserted.
The bill has already traversed the state senate and is on track for a vote in the state assembly by the week’s end. This legislation primarily aims to establish precise safety standards for AI system developers.
Response to Critics and Industry Voices
California state senator Scott Wiener, a co-author of the bill, has denounced some detractors for what he perceives as ‘fear-mongering’.
Backing Wiener’s proposed legislation, Musk characterized it as a ‘bitter pill’ in a separate social media post. His support for SB 1047 distinguishes him from various AI entities. Major tech players like OpenAI (MSFT), Meta (META), along with other AI startups, have openly expressed their opposition to the bill.
They contend that the stringent regulations outlined in the bill could impede AI progress and diminish California’s allure as a hub for AI research and startups.
