Uber Technologies Inc UBER has joined forces with Tesla Inc TSLA to galvanize drivers to make the transition to electric vehicles. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi posits that more entities will have to collaborate to achieve electrification.
Insights: According to Axios, Uber has initiated the sharing of data with Tesla to pinpoint the areas where charging infrastructure is most needed.
The two companies are also collaborating to provide Uber drivers with test drive opportunities for acclimatizing to EV technology, along with discounts for purchasing new Tesla vehicles.
In a CNBC interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Khosrowshahi emphasized that Uber’s zero-emission objectives cannot be achieved without robust action from governments and other enterprises.
“Climate is a collective endeavor. No single company or individual can propel the climate agenda alone,” asserted the Uber CEO.
Uber maintains a “completely dedicated” stance toward electrifying its fleets, with plans to go all-electric in the U.S., Canada, and Europe by 2030, and throughout the rest of the world by 2040. To meet these targets, the company is incentivizing drivers to embrace electric vehicles, Khosrowshahi affirmed.
For drivers to transition, EVs must be affordable, and substantial charging infrastructure must be in place, he contended: “We’ve shifted from a time of excitement to a time of execution.”
Numerous traditional OEMs have curbed their electrification endeavors due to demand apprehensions, and recently, Hertz announced its intention to trim a third of its global EV fleet over the year.
While acknowledging the broader waning trends in the EV sector, Khosrowshahi affirmed Uber’s proactive approach by engaging with OEMs like Tesla to lower prices, thereby making the transition more economical.
“Nobody said this was going to be effortless … we aim to persist through this more challenging period, and we are entirely committed,” reiterated the Uber CEO.
