Will Tesla's Long-Awaited Roadster Debut With a Radical New Design?

Tesla, Inc. TSLA is set to unveil its new Roadster on Oct. 1, 2026, more than eight years after first introducing the concept in 2017. A teaser released last weekend hints that the production model will feature Tesla’s signature “Cyber” design language.

The teaser also highlights SpaceX cold gas thrusters mounted at the rear, reinforcing Elon Musk’s promise of a radically redesigned vehicle. Tesla plans to reveal the Roadster at an event near Waco, TX, with the SpaceX package as the headline feature. The system uses bursts of super-chilled, pressurized gas to provide additional acceleration. Per Musk, the Roadster will reach 60 mph in less than two seconds without the thrusters and in under one second with them.

The Roadster was previously expected to debut on April 1, 2026. The original concept was unveiled nearly a decade ago, promising a 1.9-second 0-60 mph time, a 620-mile range, a starting price of about $200,000, and a 2020 launch.

In 2024, Tesla had significantly raised the Roadster’s design ambitions. Musk claimed that there would never be another vehicle like it. The model was expected to go on sale in 2025. At the time, Musk reiterated claims that the car could reach 60 mph in under a second and revived earlier posts teasing rocket thrusters through a “SpaceX option package.” TSLA currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Upcoming Models of Other Auto Manufacturers

Rivian Automotive, Inc. RIVN has introduced its R2 SUV in the United States and is considering bringing it to Europe as early as 2028. Rivian R2 will compete in the midsize electric SUV segment against vehicles such as the BMW iX3, Mercedes GLC, Volvo EX60 and Tesla Model Y. Unlike Rivian’s larger R1 pickup, built primarily for the U.S. market and more than five meters long, the R2 has dimensions better suited to European roads.

In May 2026, Lucid Group, Inc.’s LCID camouflaged Cosmos prototype was spotted testing near the company’s factory in Casa Grande, AZ, providing a closer look at the automaker’s upcoming midsize electric SUV. Lucid is preparing to unveil the Cosmos this summer, with production expected to begin in late 2026, per Electrek. The model will expand Lucid’s lineup beyond its six-figure Air sedan and Gravity SUV. With an expected starting price below $50,000, the Cosmos could give the company access to a broader customer base.
